Trucker Tips for Driving During the Spring Season
We get so caught up in the foreboding nature of winter – the grim season is upon us, so we make sure all our ducks are in row, our semi truck accessories are tuned up and our routes are meticulously planned. When spring finally rolls around, we breathe a sigh of relief, because our worries are over for now… right? Not so fast. Although concerns with winter driving are valid and important, this does not mean that all caution should be thrown out the window at the first sign of spring thaw. Here are some tips for staying safe during the spring season.
Keep those tires!
Winter tires should stay on far longer than you think. Why? The answer is simple: Spring is unpredictable. One day the tulips are poking up, the next day a snowstorm could casually pay you a visit. So until temperatures are consistently above seven degrees Celsius, please do not even think of removing your secret weapon, one of the best springtime semi truck accessories: your winter tires.
More creatures, more caution
We use the term “creatures” loosely here to include animals, children, cyclists and pedestrians. Springtime means everyone and everything is finally waking up from the winter slump. Animals in search of food will be roving around, ribs poking out after a winter of hibernation. After months of white and quiet roads, it can take some time to get used to keeping your eyes peeled again. Similarly, when going through cities, people will once again have started walking around, and cyclists will be lurking in your blind spots. Stay alert, stay cautious, and you will keep yourself and all of spring’s creatures happy.
Be prepared for the melt
Melting snow can cause a host of new trucking difficulties. So now is the time to let it be known that none of the semi truck accessories under the sun can get you safely across a flooded and washed-out roadway. So instead of trying to be superman (or woman), please turn around, and try to find an alternate route. Your truck will thank you. Less epic but still just as dangerous are the soft and porous road shoulders caused by the melting snow. Make sure to stay comfortably on the road, and take extra care with turns and country roads. Take anything that looks unsafe at a lower speed, or find an alternate route.
You got through winter, so chances are that as long as you follow the rules above, you can get through spring, too. Just don’t trade in your winter boots for cowboy ones and yeeeeehaw down the road, and you’ll be fine!
